Sorrow

Title: Sorrow
Editor: John Lawson
Publisher: Drollerie
ISBN: n/a
Why Read?: Early Review
Challenges: Witches and Witchcraft

Thoughts: The beginning of this was a bit disjointed, but once the plot really started rolling, everything fell into place.  Faina, however, was not the most well-rounded character, but Lord Ash was full of depth.

Midnight

Title: Midnight
Editor: Mari Adkins
Publisher: Apex
ISBN: 9781937009236
Why Read?: Early Review
Challenges: Witches and Witchcraft

Thoughts: So many things in this just did not make sense - almost-inappropriate relationships, cappuccino machines in a small town mid-80s grocery, an bizarre love triangle or two - but the biggest problem was the plot was just not engaging.  It was hard to follow and lacked a sense of cohesiveness.

The Crimson Brand

Title: The Crimson Brand
Author: Brian Knight
Publisher: JournalStone
ISBN: 9781940161372
Why Read?: Early Review
Challenges: Witches and Witchcraft

Thoughts: This second installment was just not as engaging as the first as there seemed to be a tad too many storylines and they never quite came together fully, especially the parts involving the title.

Author: Gregory Maguire
Publisher: Regan
ISBN: 978-0-06-074722-0
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: Witches and Witchcraft

Thoughts:  Not quite as good as Wicked, but still a decent sequel.  It ends on a very satisfying note.

Spellbound

Title: Spellbound
Author: Samantha Combs
Publisher: Astraea
ISBN: 978-1-936852-36-9
Why Read?: Book Club
Challenges: E-Book, Free Reads, Witches & Witchcraft, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: I really wanted to like this book.  The premise was pretty awesome, but there were just too many inconsistencies for me and too many things happened just like magic (no pun intended).  Also, many things did not seem realistic and definitely not contemporary for today's teens - I was feeling a 90s vibe.

Spell Struck

Title: Spell Struck
Author: Areilla Moon
Publisher: Astraea
ISBN: 978-1-62135-185-6
Why Read?: Book Club
Challenges: E-Book, Free Reads, Witches & Witchcraft, Author Alphabet, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: I seriously loved this book!  Moon handles some hard themes with a deft hand, adroitly weaving them into a fun tale of teen dabbling in magic.  Oh, and of course there is a great - and realistic - romance.

Greystone Valley

Title: Greystone Valley
Author: Charlie Brooks
Publisher: Grey Gecko
ISBN: n/a
Why Read?: Early Review
Challenges: E-Book, Free Reads, Witches & Witchcraft, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: Very cute fantasy, but rather typical themes. Middle readers will enjoy the adventure and the main character's growth.

Bless Me, Ultima

Title: Bless Me, Ultima
Author: Rudolpho Anaya
Publisher: Recorded Books
ISBN: 9781449887568
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: Audio Book, Free Reads, Author Alphabet, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: I had never heard of this until YASync had it featured as a free download last summer.  It is an interesting and engaging tale of a young Hispanic boy struggling with religion and superstition as death seems to surround him.  I did have trouble with the lines that were in Spanish as I was listening to it and not reading it, and there was not translation.

Spell Check

Title: Spell Check
Author: Ariella Moon
Publisher: Astraea
ISBN: 978-1-936852-97-0
Why Read?: Book Club
Challenges: Witches & Witchcraft, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book.  It was a fun, sweet YA with a protagonist who is just starting to learn about herself - with the help of some magic.  The only thing I had trouble with is sometimes it seemed like her dad just died, but other times it did seem like it was really two years ago.

The Conjuring Glass

Title: The Conjuring Glass
Author:  Brian Knight
Publisher: JournalStone
ISBN: 978-1-936564-73-6
Why Read?: Early Review
Challenges: Debut Author, Witches & Witchcraft, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: This was a cute middle grade fantasy. It has great themes of identity and friendship with an intriguing mystery that starts just a tad too far in because Knight has to introduce the characters and the concept of The Phoenix Girls first. I can't wait to see what is next for these intrepid girls.

Spectral

Spectral
by Shannon Duffy
published by Tribute
2012
ISBN 978-0-09837418-7-9
Why Read?: Review
Challenges:  Mystery & Suspense, Debut Author, Horror & Urban Fantasy, Witches & Witchcraft, Paranormal Fantasy, 100 Books in a Year

Shannon Duffy mixes an ancient occult feel with contemporary romance in her YA paranormal, Spectral.

Jewel Rose has spent her entire life on the run.  Every few months means a new town, a new school, and a new name.  Jewel thinks her parents are hiding from the mafia, but shortly before her seventeenth birthday, she learns the truth after moving to the sleepy little town of Ponoma Park, Florida.  Arriving at the same time as her family is another new student, Roman.  The mysterious and attractive Roman explains to Jewel that she is a spectral, a special witch who turns seventeen on a summer solstice with a full moon.  What makes a spectral so special is that she is able to assimilate the powers of any other witch if those powers are used on her.  Every coven wants her – either to use her power or to kill her because of it – and that is part of the reason her family has been running for so many years.  The other reason is that they kidnapped her for their own coven.  Now with Roman’s help, she must find her real family…but can she trust someone whose coven is out to kill her?

Spectral is very fun and fast-paced.  The pages fly by as Duffy doles out twist after twist, shaking Jewel’s sense of whom to trust with each new development.  The only problem is its lack of believability.  Yes, it is a paranormal, and by that definition alone, it is unrealistic, but there should still be some plausibility.  Jewel was a realistic teenager with solid young adult feelings but the turn her life takes was a tad too fantastic lacking the by-in that lets a reader suspend their disbelief.

All in all, Spectral is an engaging YA paranormal romance.  I look forward to more works by Shannon Duffy – especially ones with a hint of the occult.

Sorceress

Title: Sorceress
Author: Lisa Jackson
Publisher: Signet
ISBN: 978-0-451-22198-8
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges:  Historical Fiction, A to Z, Romance, Witches and Witchcraft, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: I have read Lisa Jackson's contemporary romantic suspense before and it was okay, but her historical fantasy romance is excellent.  There was enough magic to make it fun but not enough to make it unrealistic.
