The Matchmakers

The Matchmakers
by Ruth J. Hartman
published by esKape
2014
ISBN 9781940695167
Why read? Review
Challenges: Ebook, Historical Fiction, British Books, 100 Books in a Year

Ruth J. Hartman is an expert at writing Regency romances and cat-lover romances, so it is no surprise that when she combines the two, it is delightful.  The Matchmakers is an adorable novella about an eccentric, scheming elderly aunt who is determined to see her nephew married off and uses cats as a way for him to meet his match.  It is not a terribly deep story, but the characters are fun and rather well-rounded for such a short work.  The Matchmakers is cute and definitely worth an read to liven up a dull afternoon.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane

Title: The Ocean at the End of the Lane
Author: Neil Gaiman
Publisher: William Morrow
ISBN: 978-0-06-225566-2
Why Read?: Book Club
Challenges: British Books, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts:  Gaiman has totally outdone himself.  This shorter work creates a whole new mythology and plenty of mind-blowing thoughts.  Definitely one of his best works.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Title: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Author: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Publisher: Blackstone Audio
ISBN: 9780786105113
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: Audio Book, British Books, Free Reads, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts:  I think I prefer Sherlock Holmes stories one at a time.  This many all at once just made them seem so similar.  I can appreciate how Doyle was a pioneer in the mystery field, but the story that I liked the best was the most gothic, "The Adventure of the Copper Beaches".

Death Cloud

Title: Death Cloud
Author: Andrew Lane
Publisher: Macmillan Young Listeners
ISBN: 9781427211224
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: Audio Book, Historical Fiction, British Books, Free Reads, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts:  This was a good old-school teen mystery.  Some of the action, though, felt like it came out of nowhere, but the mystery was solid and very thought-provoking (like you would expect from a Holmesian novel), even if the denouement was a little early.

Grave Mercy

Title: Grave Mercy
Author: Robin LaFevers
Publisher: Recorded Books
ISBN: 9781464023835
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: Audio Book, Historical Fiction, British Books, Free Reads, Author Alphabet, YA Mythology, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts:  With a kick-ass heroine and plenty of court intrigue, Grave Mercy is a very fun read.  LaFevers has a very unique concept for this trilogy and I love how she really brought out the medieval feel with the gods of old Brittany.

Frankenstein

Title: Frankenstein
Author: Mary Shelley
Publisher: Listening Library
ISBN: 9780736685986
Why Read?: Bookclub
Challenges: Audio, British, Free Reads, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: OK, so I seem to have really known nothing about the original Frankenstein story.  Turns out, there is no Igor and the monster ends up with a wonderful command of language.  There is also a tremendous lack of action, so I am very glad I listened to this instead of reading it or I never would have finished.  I will say, though, I now understand the beginning of the movie I, Frankenstein much better.

The Color of Magic

Title: The Color of Magic
Author: Terry Pratchett
Publisher: Harper
ISBN: 978-0-062-22567-2
Why Read?: Book Club
Challenges: British Books, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: I can see why everyone in my book club is a fan of Discworld. This book was very funny and entertaining with very imaginative world-building. I am definitely going to read more.

Perfect Nightmare

Title: Perfect Nightmare
Author:Norman Stanton
Publisher: Thames River
ISBN: 978-0-85728-346-7
Why Read?: Early Review
Challenges: E-Book, British, Free Reads, Author Alphabet, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: Interesting premise about a group of unrealated people who come together to minimize the damage done by the natural disasters that they dream about.  However, each disaster was very much a standalone event, almost like each chapter was its own short story. Also, I realize this is a British book, but I had when American characters use British terms in America.

Title: The Mysterious Howling
Author: Maryrose Wood
Publisher: Blazer + Bray
ISBN: 978-0061988325
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: Audio, British, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: It takes a talented writer to craft the perfect MG book, and Wood has done just that.  This hearkens back to those timeless children's books that everyone has read and fell in love with.  And to make it even better, Katherine Kellgren has the perfect narration style.

Romance at the Royal Menagerie

Romance at the Royal Menagerie
by Ruth J. Hartman
published by Astraea
2013
ISBN 978-1-62135-188-7
Why Read?: Review
Challenges: British, 100 Books in a Year

Bringing her love of cats to a “large” scale, Ruth J. Hartman has penned a delightful Regancy in Romance at the Royal Menagerie.

Francesca Hartwell is the daughter of the big cat keeper at the Tower Zoo in London.  Although she officially is not allowed in with the cats, she cannot help getting close to them and building their trust.  The relationship she has built with the leopard becomes a major boon when she saves soon-to-be-Barron John Fairgate after he accidentally falls into her cage.  The two strike up a friendship that brings about more animosity than either could imagine.  First, there is the gold-digger who is determined to marry John and will stop at nothing to have him.  Second, there is Mr. Hartwell who despises anyone titled after his wife left him for an earl.  Francesca’s mind knows what she should do, but her heart is telling her different.

The setting is what really makes Romance at the Royal Menagerie.  Overall, it is a typical well-written Regancy, but the inclusion of the big cats—and that smell bear!—are what make it stand out.  Hartman’s writing is fun and fluid and it is obvious that her love for cats is just as big as Francesca’s.

For a fun diversion, Romance at the Royal Menagerie is a great read.  Ruth J. Hartman really brings this setting to life.

A Bright Particular Star

Title: A Bright Particular Star
Author:  Elizabeth Hanbury
Publisher: Astraea
ISBN: 978-1-62135-023-1
Why Read?: Book Club
Challenges: British, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: I liked that Hanbury wove some intrigue into what would otherwise be a typical Regency.  This elevated the book to a new level, and really kept the plot moving.  I also enjoyed how everything was wrapped up at the end - even though it was obviously what would happen, at some points it was unclear how it would all wind up right, and that was great.

The House at the End of Hope Street

Title: The House at the End of Hope Street
Author:  Meena van Praag
Publisher: Viking
ISBN: n/a
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: British, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: This novel about lost women is the perfect book to get lost in.  The literary references are fun, as in getting to know the current residents of the house at the end of Hope Street.  The story meandered with a fluidity that shouldn't have worked as well as it did.  This is a wonderful example of magical realism.

Making Waves

Author:  Nell Dixon
Publisher: Astreae
ISBN: 978-1-936852-11-6
Why Read?: Book Club
Challenges: British Books, Free Reads, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: This was a sweet and cute romance, but I really wanted more.  I loved the premise, but things seemed to move rather quickly; I would have loved to see their whole three-week holiday.

Shoggoth's Old Peculiar

Title: Shoggoth's Old Peculiar
Author:  Neil Gaiman
Publisher: Harper Audio
ISBN: n/a
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: Audio Book, British Books, Free Reads, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: With a this title, I had no clue what to expect, but I definitely got the unexpected.  For a good two-thirds, the story seems like a humorous tale of a mislead American traveler on England's coast.  But then Gaiman delivers a fun and interesting twist and caps it off with the perfect ending to make you wonder.

Cold Colors

Title: Cold Colors
Author:  Neil Gaiman
Publisher: Harper Audio
ISBN: n/a
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: Audio Book, British Books, Free Reads, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: This is a very bizarre short story. Gaiman imagines a world where technology has grown beyond its station becoming commerce and religion. And pigeons play a very interesting part. I listened to the audio version narrated by Gaiman himself, which was a treat.

Ill Met by Moonlight

Title: Ill Met by Moonlight
Author:  Sarah A. Hoyt
Publisher: Ace
ISBN: 0-441-00860-7
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: Historical Fiction, British Books, Immortal, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: This historical fantasy combines two subjects that I absolutely love - Will Shakespeare and Fae.  However, it was so slow that I just couldn't really get into it.  The climax was good, but the rising action was a very gradual slope that did not make for exciting reading.

Thrift

Title: Thrift
Author:  Phil Church
Publisher: n/a
ISBN: n/a
Why Read?: For Fun
Challenges: Why Buy the Cow, British Books, Self Published, 100 Books in a Year

Thoughts: With the title of Thrift, I really had no clue what to expect.  What I got was a funny story about a slacker teacher just trying not to get fired at a mediocre English academy.  There were a few slow parts, but most of it was just fun fluff.
